Auckland On Water Boat Show Returns Home

After 20 years the Auckland On Water Boat Show is returning to its roots, with the 2019 show to be held at the Viaduct Basin and Te Wero Island.

The first BIA-owned Boat Show was held at the America's Cup Village Island held from 11th to 1 Feb 1999. It proved an instant success with over $25 million of product on display. There were around 50 boats on the water and a further 30 on the island. The American Express New Zealand Cup Village Island as it was called had  exhibitors inside displaying a huge range of marine hardware, especially engines, electronics and clothing.

Over the years the show outgrew the venue and as the commercial operators packed out the viaduct berths for the rest of the year, they were not always happy to move for even a few days. In 2001 the organisers even utilised temporary sheds being used by AC team Stars & Stripes and America True.

In 2011 the big move was made to the current venue at the Viaduct Events Centre, where the show has been headquartered for the past seven years. In 2017 the show, sincerenamed the Auckland On Water Boat Show had been grown to such an extend that increased marina space was added and onshore exhibitors filled two marquees and around the Events Centre.

2018 will be the last year the Auckland On Water Boat Show will be held at the Viaduct Events Centre, due to the fact that Team New Zealand will be taking over the site for their America’s Cup base. They have already taken occupancy of the top floor and will be moving into the remainder of the Events Centre immediately after the show.

The MIA has been working hard with their planning for 2019 and beyond and have secured a new show site at The Viaduct Basin and Te Wero Island. Yes, it’s all going back to where it all started. The on-water space takes on a whole new look with custom berthage being built especially for the show, large marques and even the possibility of a two-story temporary building. Plus some of the outdoor space around the Viaduct Events Centre/Team NZ base will remain and probably be used to display trailer boats. The 2019 show will be held around the same time in September.
